NGBH Garden Manager (posted 4/19/22)

We are seeking a person who is familiar with native flora and has experience in the landscape/gardening field. This is a part-time, year-round position, for a maximum of 200 hours ($6,000)/year. The manager will be contracted to work every other Friday morning from 9AM– 12PM on site in Blue Hill during volunteer days (May–October) and will follow a self-directed schedule to accomplish other garden and/or administrative work as necessary.

Volunteer day duties

  • Work with NGBH board to come up goals for each gardening season and appropriate projects for volunteers to engage in.

  • Prepare necessary materials and tools for volunteer activities; alert NGBH when tools and/or materials need to be purchased.

  • Keep the volunteer log book and make sure people sign in.

  • Maintain a garden log of activities accomplished by volunteers each session.

  • Help volunteers find the tools they need to do their jobs.

  • Orient newcomers to the garden and finding tasks to do.

  • Make sure garden tools are clean and properly stored and materials organized.

 

Other responsibilities

  • Water new plants/potted plants/seedlings during weeks between volunteer days.

  • Spray deer fence as needed.

  • Communicate with lawn mowers as needed to alert them to new or changing needs.

  • Monitor the gardens for changes that can be entered into the plant database and garden plan.

  • Help with filling out the garden plan.

  • Work on making and installing plant identification tags.

  • Assist with early and late summer plant sales

  • Propagation and nursery work as needed or desired according to interest.

 

Requirements

  • 5 years experience in the gardening/landscaping business.

  • Familiarity with the native flora and resources to identify plants in the garden.

  • Understanding of sustainable gardening practices and ability to apply these to the garden and communicate to volunteers.

  • Physical fitness to work unencumbered in the garden during seasonal weather.

  • Interpersonal and organization skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Computer skills are a plus.
